Day 2 of BC Curling Championships: Team Cseke continue role as giant killers

January 06, 2022

It was another barnburner of a day in Kamloops at the 2022 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, Presented by Best Western, and the 2022 BC Men’s Curling Championship.

With the games’ first day under everyone’s belt, the Day 2 plot thickened in early round A and B event action – not the least of which was Team Cseke’s textbook takedown of CTRS leaders Team Tardi, just one day after their defeat of 9-time BC champs Team Cotter. The team’s efficiency to score two with the hammer and their ability to force Team Tardi to one point when “The Pod” had last rock advantage was the difference-maker in this A event Semi-Final match up.

It wasn’t just hard work and tough competition, though – the teams also took time to have their official photos taken by the events official photographers Jamie and Jeff Allen. You can see the women’s photos at https://bit.ly/3eWbP7q and the men’s photos at https://bit.ly/3HFP7fU.

Day 2 also saw the women’s teams take to the ice for the first time, adding a whole new level of excitement to the proceedings.

In Women’s Draw 3, at 9:00am, Team Arsenault started out strong and never let up, defeating Team Reese-Hansen 10-4. Hometown heroines Team Brown kept the pressure on Team Jensen, winning 10-2.

The Team MacMillan vs. Team Gushulak score see-sawed until MacMillan broke out in the 7th, leading to a 9-4 victory. And Team Wark dominated 12-5 over Team Cowan.

At 2:00pm, Women’s Draw 4 saw Team Arsenault top Team Wark 7-4, despite a solid start by the latter. The MacMillan vs. Brown tilt was competitive until the later ends, when MacMillan cleaned up with a 7-3 victory upsetting the 2020 BC Scotties Champions.

The 2:00pm Men’s Draw 4 began with an 11-2 Team Cotter blowout over Team Kennelly, ending with a handshake in the sixth. Team de Jong and Team Joanisse had a tight game until de Jong really hit the gas in the seventh and notched a 10-7 win. The Team Dangerfield-Team Geall battle see-sawed until a 7-6 Dangerfield victory in the eleventh. And Team Nobert kept the pressure on Team Kopytko with a 10-4 win.

The biggest surprise of the day came during Men’s Draw 5 at 7:00pm, when Team Cseke—the Islanders—continued their solid performance, defeating CTRS leaders Team Tardi 10-6. On the other sheets, Team Richard drubbed number 2 seeded Team Robillard 9-2, Team Cotter blew out Team Dangerfield 8-1, and Team de Jong dominated Team Nobert 9-3, sending the #4 seed in the championship down to the C event early in the week.

In Women’s Draw 5, also at 7:00pm, there was a competitive bout between Team Gushulak and Team Jensen, until Gushulak broke away in the later ends leading to a 9-5 victory. Shawna Jensen and her squad had a double for 3 in 10 but unfortunately over curled. Finally, Team Cowan took on Team Reese-Hansen in a 9-2 blowout.

Games continue today with Draws 6, 7, and 8 at 9:00am, 2:00pm, and 7:00pm. Catch all the action live, on Curl BC’s YouTube Channel, with commentary by Melissa Soligo and John Cullen.
