2023 BC Open and Women’s Stick Curling Championships Day 2 Recap

February 19, 2023

Day 2 was a big day at the 2023 BC Open and Women’s Stick Curling Championships in Armstrong, BC as all playoff qualifiers were determined.

In the open division, Team Mould/Shalansky (Prince George) took on local Team Fowler/Heinrichs (Armstrong) for the first spot in the playoffs. Team Fowler/Heinrichs grabbed an extra end win (4-3) to put themselves into the Page 1v2 game.

Team Mould/Shalansky had a second chance to qualify for the playoffs against Team Campbell/Sears (Armstrong) in the B-Qualifier. However, Team Campbell/Sears used the momentum they had from two big wins against Teams Smith/Pieper (Armstrong) and Prokopetz/Wejr (Vernon) earlier in the day to place themselves in the B-Qualifier spot. The final score was 3-2.

Team Campbell/Sears will play Team Fowler/Heinrichs in the Page 1v2 playoff game tomorrow morning at 10:00am.

Team Smith/Pieper (Armstrong) knew getting their first win of the event would also mean they would qualify for playoffs through the C-Event. Unfortunately for them, Team Prokopetz/Wejr were motivated to bounce back from a B-Event loss, as well. In the end, Team Prokopetz/Wejr nabbed a spot in the Page 3v4 game tomorrow morning by a score of 4-2.

Team Mould/Shalansky had one last chance to qualify for the playoffs but Team Maurer Graf (Salmon Arm) would not let them have the spot easily. After a hard-fought game, Team Mould/Shalansky got themselves into the Page 3v4 game against Team Prokopetz/Wejr tomorrow at 11:00am. Final score was 6-3.

On the women’s side, Team Farynuk/Zarowny (Enderby) got on a roll in the A-Qualifier game with a string of steals against Team Burton/Saul-Fowler (Armstrong). This led to a 5-1 win, and a spot in the playoffs.

Later, the B-Qualifier game took place between and Team Knopp/Tattersol (Enderby) Team topped Jeffrey/Palmer (Kelowna). With the team from Enderby pulling off the victory, it will make it an all-Enderby Page 1v2 game tomorrow morning at 10:00am.

At the same time, Team Radcliffe/Richard (Kelowna) and Team Campbell/Hughes (Kelowna) were fighting it out to be one of Kelowna’s representative in the playoff round. A big score of 4 in the first end by Team Radcliffe/Richard propelled them to a 5-3 win.

In the last draw of the day, Team Burton/Saul-Fowler (Armstrong) and Team Jeffrey/Palmer (Kelowna) both hoped the be there on championship Sunday. In a close game that went to an extra end, it was Team Burton/Saul-Fowler (Armstrong) earning the final spot in the playoffs.

Team Radcliffe/Richard and Team Burton/Saul-Fowler will play in the Page 3v4 game tomorrow morning at 11:00am.
