2023 BC Men’s and Women’s Curling Club Championships, Presented by Original 16—Day Two Recap

March 30, 2023

Two more draws have been played at the 2023 BC Men’s Curling Club Championships at the Abbotsford Curling Club with teams getting one step closer to playoffs.

Draw 2 kicked off in the morning with five games on the ice. In the A-Event, Team Masuch (Mission) and Team Orme (Vernon) met for Team Masuch’s opening game. Team Orme was able to score seven points in the fourth end, which ultimately would secure them a 13-2 win.

Team Craig (Kerry Park) and Team Guignard (Vancouver) were also looking to move on through the A-Event. The teams were keeping it close through the first half of the game, but it was a steal of four points to make the score 8-2 that prompted Team Craig to concede to Team Guignard.

Team Wright (Kelowna) got off to a good start against Team Johnston (Royal City) by scoring three points in the first end. Team Johnston would work their way back into the game, eventually scoring a three-spot of their own in the fifth end. In the end, Team Johnston would take the 7-6 win.

Team Komlodi (Victoria) and Team Gomes (Richmond) played the full eight ends in their game, with Team Gomes needing to score two points to force the extra end. They were not able to grab the second point they needed, and Team Komlodi remained undefeated with the 5-4 win.

One B-Event game was also on the ice during the morning draw with Team Guanzon (Marpole) taking on Team Watson (Chilliwack). It was a close game the whole way, but a couple of deuces from Team Guanzon made the difference. They would win the game 5-4.

Draw 3 started in the afternoon with four teams vying for two spots in the A-Qualifier game.

Team Johnston and Team Komlodi were competing for one of the two spots. Team Johnston was able to utilize a couple of late steals to seal the win, 5-3. Team Orme and Team Guignard were competing for the other spot to get one step closer to the playoffs. This game was all Team Orme, with the final score being 9-1.

Team Johnston and Team Orme will play for the first playoff spot at 6:00pm tomorrow in Draw 5.

The remainder of the games on the ice came from the B-Event. Team Gagnon (Abbotsford) was looking for their first win as they met with Team Craig. They were successful in this venture, grabbing a 7-4 win after steals in the sixth and seventh ends.

Team Small (Nelson) and Team Gomes hit the ice to try to stay in the B-Event. It was a score of two by Team Small after a game full of singles that moved them forward, 5-4.

Team Guanzon was coming off a win in the previous draw and was wanting to keep the momentum going against Team Masuch. Team Guanzon was able to score four points twice in this game, leading to an 8-2 win for the rink from Marpole.

In the last game on the ice, Team Frycz (Langley) and Team Wright (Kelowna) faced off. A strong performance from Team Wright showed on the scoreboard with great hammer conversion and steals. They would win the game 10-6.

Thursday afternoon will see the women’s competition kick off, while the men will be back on the ice in the evening.
