2023 BC Curling Club Championships, presented by Original 16— Day Five Recap

April 02, 2023

Saturday at the 2023 BC Men’s and Women’s Curling Club Championships saw the remaining playoff spots fill and the beginning of the page playoff games on the men’s side.

In the morning, Team Hannah (Golden Ears) and Team Shantz (Qualicum) played off for the women’s B-Qualifier spot. This was a game of steals, with both teams having their chances to jump into the lead. In the end, Team Shantz grabbed their spot in the playoff semi-finals by a score of 9-7.

In other women’s games, Team Winters (Nelson) was taking on Team Sauer (Abbotsford) in the C-Event to earn a spot in the C-Qualifier game later in the day. A steal of four in the sixth end helped to earn Team Winters a 7-4 win.

The men were also determining some more playoff qualifiers on their side with two C-Qualifier games on the ice. Team Komlodi (Victoria) and Team Wright (Kelowna) were in for a tight game, coming down to last rock. Team Komlodi came out on the winning side of a tie game, scoring the single they needed in the eighth end. Final score was 6-5.

Team Johnston (Royal City) and Team Guanzon (Marpole) wanted to grab the last playoff spot available. For Team Johnston, this was their third time in a qualifier game this championship and they were looking to lock up a spot this time around. They would be successful in doing this, putting eleven points on the scoreboard in six ends, taking the win 11-1.

In the afternoon, just a single game was on the ice to determine the final playoff qualifier for the women’s event. Team Winters and Team Hannah had an incredibly close game all the way through. At the end of the game, it was clear that a steal in the third end by Team Winters was the difference. The final score was 7-6.

The men were back on the ice in the evening for the Page 1v2 and Page 3v4 games.

Team Orme (Vernon), who was undefeated in the triple knockout bracket, was facing Team Guignard (Vancouver) for the second time this event. Team Orme had a strong performance the first time these teams met in the A-Event semi-final, taking that win 9-1. However, it was Team Guignard’s turn to have a fantastic performance on their own in the Page 1v2 game, posting a 7-2 win in this playoff meeting. Team Guignard booked a direct trip to the final on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm, while Team Orme would fall to Sunday morning’s semi-final at 9:00am.

Team Johnston and Team Komlodi were in the Page 3v4 game, with the winner moving on to the semi-final against Team Orme and the loser being sent home. Headed into the break, the game was tied 2-2. Team Komlodi came out firing on all cylinders after the break to score four points in the fifth end, leading to a 7-4 victory for them.
