More teams headed to 2019 BC Juniors after regional playdowns

Seven more teams qualified for the 2019 BC Junior Curling Championships last weekend through the junior regional playdowns.

Three junior men’s teams earned berths to the provincials via the Thompson Okanagan and Coastal playdowns. The Thompson Okanagan junior men’s playdown, which took place at Osoyoos Curling Club, was won by Vernon, Kelowna and Invermere’s Team Colwell (Erik Colwell, Logan Miron, Ben Morin, Tyler Powell).

Two teams from the Coastal playdown, which took place at Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster, received berths. Royal City’s Team Sato (Hayato Sato, Joshua Miki, Dawson Ballard,  Troy Chong) won the A event, with Langley and Royal City’s Team Umbach (Nicholas Umbach, Connor Deane, Sam Husdon, Brenin Moore) winning the B event.

Four junior women’s teams earned berths to the provincials via the Thompson Okanagan, Coastal and Northern playdowns. In the junior women’s Thompson Okanagan playdown (which also took place at Osoyoos Curling Club), Vernon and Kamloops’ Team McGillivray  (Megan McGillivray, Jaelyn Cotter, Katelyn McGillivray, Cassidy Schwaerzle) went undefeated  to earn a berth.

As with the junior men, two teams competing in the junior women’s Coastal playdown (also held at Royal City Curling Club) earned berths to the BC Juniors. Delta Thistle’s Team Drexel (Heather Drexel, Elizabeth Bowles, Haylie Farquhar, Hailey Dubois) won the A event, with Royal City and Tunnel Town’s Team Taylor (Jensen Taylor, Meredith Cole, Keira McCoy, Chelsea Taylor) winning the B event.

The Northern playdown, which was hosted by Quesnel Curling Centre, was won by Prince George’s Team Guidos (Lorelei Guidos, Bailey Ebeherr, Jordan Henson, Hannah Lindner).

The final three junior men’s berths and final two junior women’s berths will be decided through the junior open playdown, which is taking place December 7 to 9 at Ashcroft Curling Club.

  • Team Tardi (BC Junior Curling Tour)
  • Team Carpenter (BC Junior Curling Tour)
  • Team Sato (Coastal playdown)
  • Team Umbach (Coastal playdown)
  • Team Colwell (Thompson Okanagan playdown)

  • Team Daniels (BC Junior Curling Tour)
  • Team Reese-Hansen (BC Junior Curling Tour)
  • Team Drexel (Coastal playdown)
  • Team Taylor (Coastal playdown)
  • Team McGillivray (Thompson Okanagan playdown)
  • Team Guidos (Northern playdown)

The 2019 BC Junior Curling Championships will be taking place December 27 to January 1 at Vernon Curling Club.
