Seniors Start Curling at Delta Thistle Curling Club

Adult and youth Learn to Curl programs are increasing in popularity in clubs around BC, and this season Delta Thistle Curling Club has implemented a new Learn to Curl program focused on a different demographic: seniors.

“I came up with the concept myself,” said Delta Thistle Curling Club Manager Patrick Prade. “Our adult novice [program] was working well, but I wanted to create growth for our seniors as well.”

Delta Thistle has a goal of creating new curlers of all ages, something which this program, called ‘Seniors Start Curling’, can help the club achieve, as it targets a demographic that does not always have many sports programs designed specifically for it.

“It made sense to me that there likely aren’t many programs out there marketed to or designed for seniors to pick up a new sport, thus there would be a good chance of successful traction,” said Prade. “Sure enough, there was!”

Run in partnership with Delta Parks and Recreation, the $60 program ran for six weeks on Tuesday afternoons. Led by Prade and volunteers from the club’s seniors leagues, the program ended with a mini bonspiel for the 24 regular attendees.

All equipment was provided by the Delta Thistle Curling Club and participants were taught both traditional delivery and stick delivery. About 50% of the participants decided to take up traditional delivery, with the other 50% taking up stick delivery.

“It’s been a huge success. Regular attendance, very low drop out percentage, lots of fun and tons of progress week to week in playing ability,” said Prade. “Early polling sounds like the vast majority will be joining into our Tuesday or Thursday ‘Teams from a Hat’ leagues in the new year.”
