Quesnel 2019 Day 4 Highlights: Brown successful in extra end games, Wenzek and Barry set to meet in men’s 3-4 page

The month of February has started off well for eight curling teams in Quesnel. The four men’s teams and four women’s teams competing in the playoffs at the 2019 BC Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships were finalized on Friday.

With Vernon and Kelowna’s Team Cotter having already won the A event final, the second team to qualify was determined in the B event final on Friday morning, which saw Victoria’s Team Montgomery take on Golden Ears, Royal City and Victoria’s Team Joanisse. Jason Montgomery’s team of Cameron de Jong, Miles Craig and Will Duggan claimed the B qualifier spot with a 10-5 victory over Dean Joanisse’s team of Andrew Bilesky, Steve Kopf and Paul Cseke.

The result of this game also set up a rematch between Team Joanisse and Langley, Kamloops and Royal City’s Team Wenzek, who Joanisse had previously beat 7-5, for later on Friday, and a rematch between Team Montgomery and Team Cotter, who Montgomery lost to in the A final, for Saturday’s first draw.

Kamloops’ Team Brown started Friday off by putting themselves in a more comfortable position in the standings with a win over Royal City’s Team Gushulak, who had the same 3-2 record as them (along with Team Richards) heading into Friday. Team Brown’s 7-6 win came in an extra end, and was the second extra end win in a row for the team of Corryn Brown, Erin Pincott, Dezaray Hawes and Ashley Klymchuk.

Team Brown went on to win a third extra end game in a row in Friday’s afternoon draw, with an 8-7 win over Nanaimo, Parksville and Vancouver’s Team Van Osch. The women’s round robin wrapped up that draw, and determined the final women’s standings. Abbotsford’s Team Wark finished at the top of the standings with six wins and one loss, followed by Team Brown with five wins and two losses and Teams Hudyma and Richards with four wins and three losses each.

Friday proved to be an important day for Team Barry. They first beat Team Tardi in the afternoon draw with a score of 7-4 and then solidified their spot in the playoffs with a 9-3 win over Team Blandford in one of the evening’s two C event finals. The other C event final was the rematch between Team Wenzek and Team Joanisse. The teams exchanged points throughout the game, but Daniel Wenzek’s team of Jared Kolomaya, Jordan Tardi and Nicholas Meister pulled off the win with two points in the tenth end to win 10-7.

Saturday will begin with the men’s and women’s 1-2 page playoff games. Team Cotter will face Team Montgomery, and Team Wark will face Team Brown at 9:00am PT.

The men’s and women’s 3-4 page playoff games will then take place at 2:00pm PT, and pit Team Wenzek against Team Barry and Team Hudyma against Team Richards. The women’s 3-4 page playoff game will be broadcast on Shaw Spotlight and livestreamed on cbcsports.ca.

Saturday will end with the men’s and women’s semifinals at 7:00pm PT. The men’s semifinal will also be broadcast on Shaw Spotlight and livestreamed on cbcsports.ca.
