Quesnel 2019 Day 3 Highlights: Cotter clinches playoff spot, Gushulak moves up in standings

Teams inched one step closer to the 2019 BC Men’s and Women’s Curling Championship playoffs on Thursday after a full day of action at the West Fraser Centre.

Vernon and Kelowna’s Team Cotter became the first men’s team to clinch a playoff spot with a 7-5 win over Victoria’s Team Montgomery in the A event final, which was the sole men’s game in the first draw of the day. Jim Cotter, along with second Tyrel Griffith and lead Rick Sawatsky will be looking to make an appearance in the men’s final for the sixth year in a row, this time with Steve Laycock at third.

The women’s competition remained tight in Thursday’s first draw as teams battled to move into a playoff spot. Royal City’s Team Gushulak trailed Nanaimo, Parksville and Vancouver’s Team Van Osch by two points heading into the final end, but managed to score three to take the win 6-5. There was one other 6-5 game that draw, which saw Kelowna, Victoria and Prince George’s Team Richards edge out Kamloops’ Team Thompson in an extra end.

Draw eight saw the first men’s teams be eliminated from the competition, with Castlegar’s Team Horning falling 7-4 to Kelowna’s Team Eden, Royal City, Kamloops and Victoria’s Team Klymchuk falling 9-3 to Langley, Kamloops and Royal City’s Team Wenzek, and Quesnel’s own Team Waffle falling 9-3 to Abbotsford’s Team Geall, the defending champions.

Daniel Wenzek’s team of Jared Kolomaya, Jordan Tardi and Nicholas Meister survived elimination yet again in the final draw of the day, beating Wylie Eden’s team of Sean Matheson, Justin Nillson and Tyler Jaeger 9-5 to progress to the first of two C event finals.

Team Gushulak notched their second win of the day in the final draw with a 7-6 victory over Team Richards. With two wins on Thursday, Diane Gushulak’s team of Grace MacInnes, Jessie Sanderson and Ashley Sanderson moved up in the standings into a top four position, joining Team Richards, Abbotsford’s Team Wark, and Kamloops’ Team Brown at the top heading into day four.

The women’s round robin wraps up on Friday with draws at 9:00am PT and 2:00pm PT. The final three men’s qualifiers will also be determined on Friday, with the B event final taking place at 9:00am PT and the two C event finals taking place at 7:00pm PT.
