Men’s teams prepare for playdowns

Five berths are up for grabs this weekend at three BC men’s curling playdown events being held across the province.

Two berths will be available at Victoria Curling Club, two berths will be available at Vernon Curling Club and one berth will be available at Cranbrook Curling Club.

The qualifiers from these events being held Dec. 8-10 will be heading to the 2018 belairdirect BC Men’s Curling Championship, taking place at Parksville Curling Club from Jan. 30-Feb. 4. The winner of the Parksville event will go on to compete at the Tim Hortons Brier in Regina, from Mar. 3-11.

Among the contenders in Victoria are a total of five teams representing Victoria Curling Club, including Team Montgomery, Team Jackson, Team Dangerfield, Team Henderson and Team Craig. Team Jackson were bronze medallists at last year’s provincials.

Team Brower will also be there representing Richmond and Victoria. The Island teams will be joined by Team McQuiggan, representing Richmond and Team McCrady, a junior team representing Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster.

In the Kootenays Team Ducharme from Creston return to playdowns, along with Team Medford from Cranbrook and Team Salviulo from Trail and Castlegar.
The six teams competing in Vernon are team Baier from Kelowna, Team Blanchett from Prince George, Team Eden from Kelowna, Team Longworth from Vernon, Team Pierce from Royal City and Team Schneider from Royal City.

For the first time all Curl BC men’s playdowns are open, which means teams from any part of the province may enter any event in any region.

Two men’s teams have already secured their berths to the championships.

Team Joanisse, from Golden Ears Winter Club in Maple Ridge, and Team Geall, from Kelowna Curling Club, were the top-ranked BC men’s teams on the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) list.

Team Joanisse were last year’s provincial silver medallists.
