Accident Insurance

The personal accident insurance coverage through Curl BC membership is available to curlers at affiliated curling centres that have opted into the program.

Anyone who curls more than three (3) times per season at an affiliated Curl BC facility must be included in the membership list submitted to Curl BC, which will be used to verify if a curler has coverage in the event of an accident.

Broadly speaking, the policy is intended to provide coverage for injury that occurs as a result of participation in the sport of curling only. If each facility pursued this type of insurance individually, it is estimated it would cost BC curling centres over $50,000 (over twice as much).

Some key features of the policy include up to $15,000 for Accident Reimbursement Expenses, $5,000 for Dental Costs and $3,000 for Fracture Indemnity. A full copy of the policy wordings is available upon request.

It is important to note that this is not a legal liability policy, which is intended to protect your business from liability arising from negligence that may cause injury to others. This policy is intended to be for the benefit of the individual club member who has suffered an injury as a result of participating in the sport of curling. Curling centres in BC can get property and liability insurance through the The National Curling Centre Insurance Program, a separate policy.

Procedures for including Drop-In Curlers as part of the Personal Accident Insurance Policy:

  • Curling centres must maintain a drop-in list at their centre and include the full name of each individual to be covered by the policy. It is recommended that each drop in group be required to sign a waiver form with all participants’ names listed prior to stepping on the ice.
  • Curling centre must submit their “Drop-In” list annually, including the names of all individuals who participated, by April 15th.
  • Curl BC will invoice curling centres who have opted in for drop-in insurance within 14 days of submission of their final list.

Definitions of type of curlers:

Regular Curlers: Anyone who curls in a regularly scheduled league at an affiliated curling centre, whether that league is organized by the curling centre or by another outside group (commercial league, rental league, Masters league, etc.) must be included on the list of Regular Curlers. This also includes participants in provincial playdowns who may or may not play in regularly scheduled league but who are fully paid members, representing your facility at competitions. Curling centres pay affiliation fees to Curl BC based on $15 per Regular Curler registered at their centre.

Spare Curlers: Anyone who curls intermittently, but more than three (3) times in a curling season, must be included on the list of “Regular Curlers” and included in a centre’s affiliation count.

Drop-In Curlers: Anyone who curls three (3) or fewer times in a curling season does not need to be included on the list of “Regular Curlers” and will not be included in affiliation count. However, curlers in this category can receive personal accident insurance if their curling centre pays an additional $1 for all drop-in curlers at the centre and includes their full name on the “Drop-In List” provided to Curl BC for reporting purposes.
