Lower mainland teams take 2015 BC Juvenile Championship titles

Two teams from the lower mainland will represent BC at nationals in Edmonton after being crowned the 2015 Tim Hortons BC Juvenile Champions.

Team McCrady, which curls out of Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster, won the Boys’ title in a dramatic final which included two extra ends.

The Girls’ event was won by Team Drexel who was unbeaten throughout the entire event. The rink includes curlers from Cloverdale, Peace Arch and Coquitlam.

Skip Matthew McCrady, and his team of third Zac Curtis, second Liam Purgavie and lead Jacob Umbach, bounced back from a defeat to Team Horvath earlier in the week to beat them 5-4 in the final.

The Boys’ final had the crowds in Lake Cowichan gripped after McCrady scored a deuce in the eighth to force an extra end. Horvath’s team of skip Alex, third Ryan Cassidy, second Evan Scott-Moncrieff and lead Alex Stoyles, then blanked the ninth before McCrady stole a single in the final end to punch their ticket to nationals.

Speaking after the final, Team McCrady’s coach Will Sutton said: “Despite losing earlier in the week, the boys were feeling pretty good before the final. They are very excited about going to nationals; they’re still a little bit in shock but are looking forward to it.”

Even though they topped their qualification pool, Team Drexel faced a tough fight to make it into the Girls’ gold medal game. In their semi-final the rink of skip Heather Drexel, third Sarah Loken, second Bailey Burke, lead Catera Park and fifth Kylie Karoway, were forced to play an extra end after their opposition stole two in the eighth.

The final was a more straight forward game as Drexel defeated Prince George’s Team Withey 8-2 to claim the gold.

The silver medal winning skip Jessie Withey, and her team of third Carly Conner, second Hannah Lindner and lead Carsyn Hamilton, also had an exciting semi-final in which they came back from 5-1 down to win 7-6.

Drexel and McCrady will now go on to Edmonton to represent the province at the Optimist U18 International Juvenile Curling Championships from April 1-5.

The bronze medals in both the Girls’ and Boys’ events were won by teams from Vernon. On the Boys’ side the medal went to Team Love which is made up of skip Thomas Love, third Erik Colwell, second Brendan Chapple and lead Johnathan Schwartz. In the Girls’ event it was won by Team Schmidt which consists of skip Clare Schmidt, third Jaelyn Cotter, second Winter Harvey and lead Cassidy Schwaerzle.
