Our House is Your House

Host a Sandra Schmirler Fundraiser

The Sandra Schmirler Foundation is designated by Curl BC as the charity of choice for curling in BC. Since its creation in January 2001 as a legacy to our 3-time world curling champion and Olympic gold medalist, and in recognition and celebration of her love of family, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation has contributed one million dollars to help seriously ill children across the country.

With the 2010 Olympics here in our backyard, and as we are approaching the 10th year since her death, what better way to honor Sandra’s memory than to identify one fundraising project at your curling club this season and donate the proceeds to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation. This fundraising project can be as simple as a 50/50 draw or as large as your imagination.

Working hand-in-hand, the Foundation’s mission is “caring for babies in crisis” through direct giving to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) facilities. The Foundation recognizes in these premature babies the same will to live that fueled Sandra’s battle with cancer. By supporting the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, your club will help babies to grow and reach their potential because ultimately, like Sandra, all “Champions Start Small”.

The SSF accepts applications from primary neonatal intensive care units in hospitals. Primary NICU facilities are equipped to handle the most complicated and urgent cases of premature births. Premature babies from all around BC are sent to these hospitals. By focusing our efforts on these primary NICU facilities, the Foundation has a greater impact with grants that are large enough to fund equipment purchases. This mission is even more urgent given the current restraints surrounding funding for hospital equipment.

The SANDRA SCHMIRLER TELETHON is scheduled for the opening weekend of the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Jan 30/31, 2010 and they look forward to taking your call and receiving the proceeds of your fundraiser.

Please respond by email dibarker@telus.net to confirm that your club will hold one fundraiser this season to work ‘hand in hand’ with the Sandra Schmirler Foundation to ‘care for the babies in crisis’.
