Dawson Ballard awarded Gordon Hooey Memorial Scholarship

The Gordon Hooey Memorial Scholarship Fund was developed for the advancement of the sport of curling through the development of athletes and coaches, and Dawson Ballard has been named this year’s recipient of the scholarship.

Ballard has had a successful year as the skip of his team, winning the 2018 Optimist BC U18 Championship and coming second at the 2018 Boston Pizza BC Junior Championship.

Ballard volunteers at the Royal City Curling Club Junior Program and has helped coach his younger brother’s team. This past season he completed his Club Coach certification.

Having been accepted into Trinity Western University’s Pre-Medicine program, Ballard has a bright future ahead of him.

“Curling has really helped prepare me to achieve this plan [of going to medical school], as it has taught me numerous qualities that I can use to assist myself along the way,” Ballard said in his application, “One of them being that hard work and dedication almost always pays off in the end.”
