The Coaching Association of Canada and Curl BC recognize the value of having certified NCCP coaches that are engaged in Professional Development programs which reinforce the values of lifelong learning and sharing amongst the coaching community.
In order for NCCP coaches to maintain their certified status, they will be required to obtain Professional Development (PD) points. PD points can be earned through a multitude of activities that coaches already participate in, including: national and provincial sport organization conferences and workshops, eLearning modules, NCCP workshops, coach mentorship programs, and active coaching. In most cases coaches are already earning their required PD points — Maintenance of Certification Status is simply the introduction of tracking these points and recognizing coaches for their efforts.

Timelines, Important Dates and Details
When did/does this “maintenance of certification” begin?
Effective January 1, 2014 the five (5) year certification period will begin. Note January 1 of any year will be the date used to determine the certification period of valid certification (i.e. if a coach is certified on May 1, 2014 their five year certification period will begin on January 1, 2015). Canadian Curling Associations Policy on Curling's NCCP Maintenance of Certification.
How many PD points do I need to “maintain certification”?
Competition Coach Certified – require 20 PD points over 5 years
Competition Development Coach Certified – require 30 PD points over 5 years
Certified = completion of all components (MED course, MED module, workshop, on-ice evaluation).
All Level 2 and Level 3 coaches in the 'old system' will be required to collect PD Points and take steps to be transferred to the 'new system'. See http://www.curlbc.ca/transferring-system-levels-to-new-nccp/ for details on transferring systems.
Can I acquire more than the 20 or 30 PD points that are required?
Yes. But points cannot be carried over in to future 5 year cycles. When a 5-year cycle ends, PD points are reset to zero.
Note: The number of PD points required to maintain certification is specific to each sport. If you also coach in another sport these numbers may be different.
What happens if I don't acquire PD Points?
You will remain a certified coach but have a status of "not renewed" assigned to your certification. To renew your certification, one must, complete an on-ice evaluation and the accompanying paperwork. The cost for the renewed evaluation is $84.40.
