BC Club Challenge starts in Abbotsford

Twenty-four teams of club curlers from across BC have gathered in Abbotsford for a special anniversary event.

It is the 20th year of the BC Club Challenge which sees teams that compete at the club level gather together to name a provincial champion.

The event was previously combined with the Pacific International Cup in Richmond, but this year it is being run separately.

BC joined several provinces this season in piloting an open registration format for the Club Challenge, meaning that any number of teams from a club could enter their respective regional event provided that they met the eligibility requirements.

At the event running at Abbotsford Curling Club from today (Mar. 21) until Sunday (Mar. 24) there will be 12 women’s teams and 12 men’s teams.

Rosters, scores and schedules can be seen at http://playdowns.curlbc.ca. The clubs represented in the Club Challenge are Vernon, Invermere, Abbotsford, McArthur Curling Club (Kamloops), Golden Ears (Maple Ridge), Nanaimo, Peace Arch (White Rock), Nelson, Marpole (Vancouver), Langley, Duncan, Winfield, Comox, Richmond, Royal City (New Westminster), Delta Thistle, Powell River, Victoria and Kamloops.

Kim Dennis, Curl BC’s Education & Camps Coordinator, is helping to run the event. She was also a winner of the event in 2017. Dennis said: “The Club Challenge is a fantastic event and it was an honour to play in it and represent my club and then represent BC at the national level. I hope that every curler gets as much enjoyment out of it as I did.”

The top three women’s teams and top three men’s teams from the BC Club Challenge will receive a berth to the Pacific International Cup, which is taking place April 17 to 21, 2019, at Richmond Curling Centre. If these teams opt out of participating in the PIC, the opportunity will be offered to the next best BC Club Challenge finisher.

The winning men’s and women’s teams will also have the opportunity to compete at a national event but the details of that event, taking place in November, have not been released.
