High Performance Program Now Accepting Applications

Curl BC’s High Performance Program, now called the Competition, Development and Athlete Enhancement Program, is accepting applications for the 2012-13 season.

The program exists to provide support and resources to podium potential athletes who are the future of our sport. It aspires to move the performance benchmarks with a mandate to first identify the gaps in athlete development and then use specific resources to bridge those gaps.

In addition to the name change, there has been a couple of key modifications to the program including:

  • introduction of 4 tiers – Elite, Provincial La Releve, Podium Project and High Performance Development
  • alignment of tiers to CCA standards / funding
  • re-introduction of pre-season high performance camps

For more information or to download the application please go to: http://www.curlbc.ca/development/high-performance/about-the-program/

Applications are due April 27th.

BC senior men still in the hunt for national title

With one round robin draw remaining at the 2012 Canadian Senior Men’s Curling Championship in Abbotsford, BC, Alberta’s Rob Armitage of the Red Deer Curling Centre has earned a bye directly to Sunday’s championship final.

Armitage defeated Eugene Hritzuk of Saskatchewan 9-7 improving his record to 9-1 and two wins clear of the rest of the field. Down a single point playing the 6th end, the Alberta skip scored three followed by a steal of three in the 7th end. Despite giving up a deuce in the 8th and a steal in the 9th, he waltzed home two up with the hammer. [Read more…]

Wright team repeats as Tour Championship winners

It didn’t look good for the Steve Wright team after the first draw of the Region 11 Men’s Bonspiel Tour Championship on Friday night at the Delta Thistle CC. Wright and team mates Don Burrus, Curt Bogren and Greg Hruby lost badly to the Terry Johnson rink out of Richmond. If they were going to defend the Tour Championship title they won last season they would have to win six straight games and play three games on both Saturday and Sunday, as they had dropped into the long route to qualify in the double knockout event.

They managed to do it though, defeating Johnson when they met again in the B event qualifying game in their pool, and beating Royal City club mate Doug Meger in the championship final 6-3.

The final game was tied 2-2 after five ends after an exchange of single points with the hammer and a blank end. Meger’s team (third Terry Miller, second Rob Rempel, lead Richard LePage) made a move in the sixth end, establishing centre guards then stealing a point to go ahead 3-2. Wright threw his last rock away rather than play a risky run back for a point. [Read more…]
