CCA announces Yellowknife as site of 2014 Canadian Seniors

OTTAWA, January 24, 2012…The Canadian Curling Association (CCA) today announced that, for the first time, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories will host the 2014 Canadian Senior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships.

The Canadian Seniors will be contested March 22-30, 2014 at the Yellowknife Curling Centre.

“The Canadian Curling Association is quite pleased to be in the position of hosting our first ever national championship in the Northwest Territories. The CCA continues to provide opportunities for all of our Member Associations to host CCA-operated championships and we feel that the Canadian Seniors is an ideal fit for Yellowknife,” explained Greg Stremlaw, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Curling Association. Coastal Senior Playdown Results

Congratulations to Teams Watson, Gessner, Harris and Meger for advancing from the Senior Men’s Coastal Playdown held at the Royal City Curling Club last weekend; as well to Teams Shantz, Smiley, Clark and Lepine for advancing in the Senior Women’s Coastal Playdown held at the Kerry Park Curling Club.

Teams now advance to the 2012 Tim Hortons BC Senior Curling Championships in Kelowna, Feb 14-19.

Ashley Nordin wins Gordon Hooey Memorial Scholarship

Congratulations to Ashley Nordin who is this year’s recipient of the Gordon Hooey Memorial Scholarship. This award will assist Ashley in her studies at Thompson Rivers University, while maintaining her curling training.

2012 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship begins today

Players take to the ice today for the start of the 2012 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship presented by Best Western at the North Shore Winter Club in North Vancouver.

This year’s line-up includes all medaling teams from last year’s championship held in Cloverdale. Kelly Scott is back as the defending champion with 2011 World Silver Medalist, Dailene Sivertson replacing long-time third Jeanna Schraeder. Kelley Law is also back with a revamped line-up hoping that it will be third-time lucky in this year’s final, and Roselyn Craig is back with her team from the island to build upon their 2011 bronze medal.

Coastal senior playdowns on this weekend

Both Senior Men’s & Senior Women’s Coastal Curling Playdowns are taking place this weekend.

The senior men began play yesterday at the Royal City Curling Club with 23 teams vying for 4 spots into the BC championship. The senior women begin play today at the Kerry Park Curling Club with 8 teams competing for 4 berths.

Qualifying teams advance to the 2012 Tim Hortons BC Senior Curling Championships in Kelowna Feb. 14-19.

Injured military personnel to take part in winter activity program in Vancouver & Whistler.

On January 22nd eight Canadian and eight British service personnel will arrive in Whistler to participate in an 8 day program that introduces them to a range of adaptive winter sports and recreational activities. The program was designed and planned by UK based, Larnie Ball, ‘Bridging the Gap Adventures’ and Canadian based, Sian Blyth, ‘You Can Event Management’. The program has been created for ill and injured military personnel from the organizations ‘Battle Back’ in the UK and ‘Soldier On’ in Canada.

Battle Back is a program managed by the Ministry of Defense in Great Britain to identify, facilitate and encourage adaptive Adventurous Training (AT) and sport opportunities for wounded Service personnel to aid their rehabilitation and return to an active life. [Read more…]

2012 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors

The M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Men¹s and Women¹s Curling Championships will be contested February 4-12 in Napanee, Ontario.

This marks the seventh year of title sponsorship by M&M Meat Shops, Canada’s leading retail chain of specialty frozen foods.

Thirteen men¹s and 13 women¹s teams (representing the 10 provinces plus Northern Ontario, Northwest Territories and Yukon) will compete. Round robin games will be played at both the Strathcona Paper Centre and Napanee & District Curling Club. At the conclusion of the round robin, and, after any tiebreakers, the first place teams advance to their respective finals, while the second and third place finishers meet in semi-finals.

Both the women¹s and men¹s finals will be played at the Strathcona Paper Centre and will be televised live across Canada on TSN & RDS (in Quebec). The women¹s final takes place on Saturday, February 11 at 7:00 pm ET while the men¹s final is on Sunday, February 12, also at 7:00 pm ET. [Read more…]

Gaming funding for adult sport reinstated

Thanks to several curlers along with 1,700 other British Columbians providing input into the Gaming Review process, the Premier has agreed to reinstate Gaming funding for adult sport. Even better, there will be a special intake period to allocate $6M this fiscal year to adult sport groups, among other community groups, held from now until Feb. 13th. Action curling centres should take now:

  • Submit an application in the last 2 weeks of January for this special intake period.
  • Prepare an application for the 2012/13 fiscal year in April (deadline May 31st)
  • Send an email or write a letter of thanks to Premier Christy Clark, premier@gov.bc.ca, and Minister Ida Chong, ida.chong.mla@leg.bc.ca
