Craig and her Victoria team of Michelle Allen, Sarah Wark, Simone Brosseau and Coach Bill Tschirhart went undefeated in the 5-team double knockout event. They sneaked by Leanne Andrews (Royal City) with a 6-5 extra-end victory in their first game, and stole a single in the 10th to defeat Backe and advance to the provincial championship.

Backe and her Royal City team of Rachelle Kallechy, Lindsae Page, Kelsi Jones and Coach Katie Witt started their weekend with an 8-5 win over Richmond’s Kristy Lewis before falling to Craig, but bounced back to defeat Lewis 8-5 again in the B-event qualifier.

This was the second of four open qualifying events for the BC championship. The last two events are at the McArthur Island Curling Club, Dec. 2-5 and the Chilliwack Curling Club, Dec. 16-18. Teams that were not successful in qualifying this past weekend are eligible to enter both of these open qualifying events, where two teams will advance from each. [Read more…]

BC’s Hodder back into the fight at The Dominion Curling Club Championship

Dwight Hodder wasn’t about to get pushed around in his home province of British Columbia for too long at the Dominion Curling Championship in Richmond.

The B.C. skip, who split his opening two games at the Richmond Curling Club, knocked off previously unbeaten Wade Thurber of Alberta 6-2 Wednesday evening to climb right back into the fight for the club curling championship of Canada.

The Albertans, who were cruising along with a spiffy 3-0 record until they clashed with Hodder, fell to 3-1 and into a tie with Manitoba’s Barry Mandryk atop the Grey Pool standings. Mandryk, out of the Assiniboine-Memorial Club in Winnipeg, who lost his first game earlier in the day, zapped Mel Sittichinli of the Territories 7-3 to climb back into the lead with Alberta. Law & Pierce advance to 2012 BC Curling Championships

Congratulations to the Kelley Law and Brent Pierce teams of the Royal City Curling Club. Both teams have earned berths into the 2012 provincial championships by leading the province in CTRS (Canadian Team Ranking System) points.

Points are calculated between December first of each year based on their performances at CTRS approved tournaments. If points are collected across two different seasons, then three of the players must return to the roster in the second season in order for the team to maintain the points.

The Law rink of Shannon Aleksic, Kirsten Fox, Dawn Suliak, Sherry Fraser and coach Brent Giles will now join Kelowna’s Kelly Scott, Kamloops’ Allison MacInnes and Richmond’s Kelly Thompson, in the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts BC Women’s Curling Championship presented by Best Western. The provincial championship will be hosted by the North Shore Winter Club from January 23-29, 2012. [Read more…]

Edmonton to stage 2013 Tim Hortons Brier

EDMONTON, Alberta, November 23, 2011…The City of Edmonton will stage the 2013 Tim Hortons Brier, it was announced today by the Canadian Curling Association (CCA).

The Tim Hortons Brier, presented by Monsanto, will be played March 2-10 at Rexall Place. It will mark the sixth time that Edmonton has hosted the Canadian Men’s Curling Championship, the last in 2005, and the 13th time it has been staged in Alberta, since the event began in 1927 in Toronto.

Edmonton joins Calgary, Halifax, Saskatoon and Toronto as the only cities to host the Brier on at least six occasions. It also will be the fourth major curling event held in the city in the last eight years, following the inaugural Tim Hortons Brier in 2005, the Ford World Men’s in 2007 and the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings (Canadian Curling Trials) in 2009. In fact, event attendance records were established at all three.

“The City of Edmonton has proven to be one of the most successful hosts for the Season of Champions properties over the past decade,” stated Greg Stremlaw, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Curling Association. “The success of the 2005 Brier still resonates with curling fans across Canada as the largest attended curling event in history. As the most recent major curling event hosted in Edmonton, the 2009 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings was yet another stellar event that served as the springboard for the selection of our Olympic curling teams in 2010.
