‘Becoming a World Class Speaker to a Youth Audience’ Training

Motivate Canada is recruiting national team athletes to join its national Esteem Team roster. Olympic, Paralympic or national-level athletes that complete a two-day training session on public speaking to youth will be qualified to conduct Esteem Team presentations in schools within their community and throughout Canada. The next 2-day training session is to take place in Vancouver on November 24-25, 2011. There is no charge to attend thanks to our partners at Sport Canada, however space is limited. [Read more…]

TSN Enhances Major Partnership with Canadian Curling Association

Bell Media’s TSN and the Canadian Curling Association (CCA) announced  they are enhancing their partnership with a long-term multimedia rights extension. As part of the new deal, TSN continues to be the home of curling in Canada through to the 2019-20 season with exclusive Canadian rights to Season of Champions events.

The new deal also includes extended French-language coverage on Bell Media’s RDS and RDS2 – ensuring more French-language curling coverage than ever before with 250 hours of Season of Champions coverage. Multiple other components and activation strategies, such as Continental Cup coverage in Olympic years and guaranteed broadcasting of the new Pre-trials Road to the Roar, have been established to help to continue to grow the sport across Canada. Updated 20 Weeks & Skill Awards Manuals

Both the 20 Weeks and Curl BC Skill Awards Manuals have been updated. Updates reflect concepts from the Long Term Athlete Development Model. The 20 Weeks Manual is also now available in full colour.

Both manuals can be ordered through the Curl BC office by submitting a Resource Order Form

Nanaimo takes gold at BC Senior Games

Congratulations to two Nanaimo curling teams who won gold medals in the 2011  BC Senior Summer Games held in Trail last month.

The mixed champions were Garry Smith, Dianne Smith, Frank Voysey and Eleanor Voysey. The women’s champions were Joanne Phillips, Shirley Sloan, Karen Hungar and Susan Barber.

Remembering Sheila Tait (Doherty)

Curl BC regrets to announce the loss of another instrumental curler in BC. Sheila Tait was a former President of the BC Ladies’ Curling Association and coached Linda Moore to her first provincial title.

TAIT, Sheila Margaret (nee Doherty) October 21, 1922 September 13, 2011 A keen curler (Pres of BCLCA) and golfer (low net club championship 2000). A gifted gardener all she planted thrived under her care. She loved the ocean and treasured her many vacation years on the West Coast with family. Sheila is survived by her loving husband of nearly 70 years Bob (Qualicum Beach), Children: Barbara (Victoria), Judy (Victoria), Rob (Pat)(North Vancouver) and Susan (Qualicum Beach); six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life Tea will be held on Sunday, September 25th, 2011 at 137 Denman Drive, Qualicum Beach, BC between 1:00 and 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Parksville/ Qualicum Beach chapter of the Salvation Army where Sheila happily counted and rolled coins from the Christmas kettles. BC curlers lose athlete, coach & friend

It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing after a long battle with cancer of Glen Arnold Pierce of Maple Ridge, BC on September 17th, 2011, at the age of 69. Two days short of his 70th birthday. He was surrounded by the love of his family and friends and has finally achieved peace and comfort with his higher power. Glen will be forever remembered by his wife Eleanor, 3 children; Brent (Susan), Shannon (Rob) and his adopted daughter Kim (Mitch). He will be missed by many including his 3 grandchildren; (Cassie, Gavin and Taylor); his siblings Ruth (Leroy), Bob (Jan) and Judy. One of his proudest moments was when he coached his son, Brent, to victory in the 2000 World Curling Championship. He was respected in the curling world by many. Heartfelt thanks to the staff at McKenney Creek Hospice. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 25th, 2011 at 2:00p.m. at Royal City Curling Club, 75 East 6th Avenue, New Westminster, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the McKenney Creek Hospice. Glen, you will always be in our hearts.
