BC athletes pose for charity in 2011 women’s curling calendar

BC’s Sarah Wark & Darah Provencal will be Miss June & Miss December in the 2011 Women of Curling Calendar. The calendar is available to order online from http://www.micalendardemo.com/woc/ with all proceeds going to Shoot for a Cure.

Shoot for a Cure, which is also supported by the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) is committed to finding a cure for spinal paralysis. The campaign also strives to increase awareness of the Paralympic sport of Wheelchair Curling.

Wenzek & Gunner advance to Canada Winter Games BC playoff

Both the Daniel Wenzek & Zetteh Gunner teams were victorious this past weekend at the Curl BC Canada Winter Games Backdoor Qualifier event at the Cloverdale Curling Club. ProMOTION Plus and BCRPA are excited to announce incentives of up to $2,500 for sport programs that target non-active women 55 and older.

Background:
The Women 55+ Incentive Program Grant was developed to provide opportunities to participate in sport for non-active women age 55 and over in all regions of BC. The programs can be focused on a single sport or can be designed to provide exposure to a multi-sport experience for women 55 years and over. The goal of the program is to provide opportunity and access to positive sport experiences for non-active females 55 years of age and over. Program participants will be encouraged to sign up for leagues, clubs or programs which encourage sustainable healthy and active lifestyles. Partnerships with other organizations/municipalities/Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) are encouraged. 

The Women 55+ Incentive Program is a partnership between ProMOTION Plus and the BC Recreation and Parks Association with the support of 2010 Legacies Now, the Provincial Government of BC and the Canadian Federal Government through the BC Sport Participation program

Community Sport Hero® Awards presented by EnCana

The Community Sport Hero® Awards presented by Encana honours the outstanding sport volunteers in communities across British Columbia. Founded in 2001, the prestigious awards recognize coaches, officials, mentors and administrators who have dedicated themselves to grow and develop amateur sport at the community level. The dedication and leadership of these individuals have allowed athletes and communities to grow and shape sport in British Columbia and inspire others to become involved in sport.

Thanks to a partnership with Encana, the program visits one BC community each month with the intention that the award ceremony will remain in the community as an annual tradition of volunteer recognition. [Read more…]

Anita Cochrane passes on

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Anita Cochrane. Anita Cochrane cropped

Anita passed away Tuesday night at 6pm with her family by her side. In her final few weeks, she rested in her parents’ home and remained her positive self.

Anita had a very public battle with cancer for many years and was an inspiration to those around her. She was awarded the 2010 Curl BC Coach of the Year Award and was one of the founders of the recently announced Curl BC Curling for Life Endowment Fund.
