The Kootenays rinks of Alysha Buchy and Zane Bartlett have won the 2016 BC Secondary School Curling Championships.
The event took place at Delta Thistle Curling Club from March 2 to March 5.
The event featured 16 teams (eight girls’ teams and eight boys’ teams) competing in a round robin format with the team with the winning record taking the title.
Team Buchy, of Selkirk Secondary School in Kimberley, finished with a 6-1 record to take the girls’ trophy. The winning team coached by Grant Farquhar features skip Alysha Buchy, third Kaila Buchy, second, Haylie Farquhar, lead Arissa Toffolo.
Team Barlett, of Grand Forks Secondary School, also finished with a 6-1 record, but had to play in a tiebreaker because the Smithers Secondary School team of Sean Turney also had a 6-1 record.
The Grand Forks rink beat the Smithers rink 7-4 in the tiebreaker game, securing the gold, and handing the boys from Smithers the silver medals.
The winning rink from Grand Forks features skip Zane Bartlett, third Colin Anderson, second Devin Anderson, leads Elliott Starchuk and Dawson Reid and coach Dave Bartlett.
Bronze went to Rhett Hildenbrandt’s Lord Tweedsmuir, Surrey, rink.
In the girls’ game, the Prince George rink of Alyssa Connell (College Heights Secondary School) and Lorelei Guidos’ Salmon Arm team both finished tied for second with 5-2 records. The Guidos rink were successful in the tiebreaker to claim the silver medals and hand Team Connell the bronze.
