Frontrunners emerge on day three of BC Scotties

The frontrunners are starting to emerge as day three of the BC Scotties continues.

The 2016 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Best Western, showcases the top eight women’s curling teams in the province. The action takes place at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex in Coquitlam right now until Sunday (January 24).

The winning team will represent B.C. at the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian Women’s Curling Championship in Grand Prairie from February 18-20.

Among the frontrunners is Karla Thompson, from Kamloops, who represented B.C. back in 2008. Her team of third Kristen Recksiedler, second Tracey Lavery, lead Trysta Vandale and coach Jeff Richard are undefeated in Coquitlam with four draws complete.

Also looking strong is the rink of six-time BC champion, Kelly Scott, who is representing Kelowna Curling Club. Her team of third Shannon Aleksic and lead Sarah Pyke is joined by new team member Jenna Loder for the 2015-16 season. They are posting a 3-1 record after losing to Team Gibson of Royal City Curling Club in the fourth draw. Team Gibson, with Amy Gibson, Lindsay Hudyma, Rebecca Turley, Michelle Dunn, Kirsten Fox and coach Jay Batch stole a point in the 10th end to win 9-7 and end Team Scott’s perfect record.

Four teams are posting 2-2 records. Patti Knezevic’s Prince George rink, Diane Gushulak’s rink, Kesa Van Osch’s Nanaimo rink and Sarah Wark’s Victoria rink will be looking for more wins this evening (6:30 p.m. draw) to work towards clinching a playoff spot.

On Saturday, the top four teams will battle it out in page playoffs.

The Coquitlam event is an 8-team round robin format with page playoffs. The top three teams will be featured on television – the semi final will air at 11 a.m. on Sunday, January 24, on Sportsnet Pacific, and the final will air at 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 24, on Sportsnet One.
