Championship curling playoffs begin tonight for BC teams

Vernon, BC (February 5, 2010) – The 2010 Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men’s Curling Championship presented by Kal-Tire at the Vernon Curling Club has narrowed the field down to four teams. The last draw of round-robin play was held this morning and resulted with no need for tie-breakers.

Bob Ursel maintained his undefeated record with a 7-4 victory over Bert Gretzinger, who managed to avoid a tiebreaker and claim the fourth playoff spot. Sean Geall also finished with a win over Steve Waatainen and claimed second place while Jeff Richard beat Jay Tuson to claim third place.

Ursel will face off against Geall in tonight’s 1 vs. 2 game for a spot in Sunday’s final. The loser will have a second chance in tomorrow’s semi-final game against the winner of Gretzinger and Richard in tomorrow morning’s quarter final match.

The semi-final will be aired on Shaw TV and Shaw Direct (Star Choice 299) this Saturday, February 6th at 7pm PST, and the final will follow on Sunday, February 7th at 10am PST. Click here for live results and final round-robin standings.

Across the country, Kelly Scott’s rink had a good day yesterday at the 2010 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. Scott defeated NFLD 8-2 last night to clinch the third playoff spot at the end of round-robin play. The Kelowna foursome will face the winner of today’s tie-breaker between Manitoba and Ontario, in tomorrow’s quarter-final at 10am PST.
